Writing your birth plan

A birth plan is not a script. It is a short written note of what matters to you, so that people looking after you do not have to guess while you are busy. Keep it to one page. Say what you would prefer for pain relief, who you want in the room, and anything about your history that is relevant. Then write a line about what you would want if things change and the plan cannot be followed, because that is the part most plans skip and the part most likely to be needed. Flexibility here is not failure.
